Description

Vitaly Friedman, editor-in-chief of Smashing Magazine, will teach a one-day intensive workshop on the current state-of-the art in responsive web design, aimed at practicing web designers and developers.

The workshop will cover a selection of the following topics:

  • architecting and building pattern libraries and design systems
  • content choreography, internationalization and localization issues
  • layout techniques (Flexbox and CSS Grid)
  • resolution independence (SVG Gotchas)
  • compressing images (optimization and techniques)
  • responsive images (technical perspective)
  • dealing with web fonts (options, strategy, code snippets)
  • deferring and lazy-loading JavaScript (techniques, tools)
  • performance issues/strategy (best practices + HTTP/2 + HTTPS + prefetching techniques)
  • transition from HTTP to HTTPS
  • maintenance issues (e.g. dealing with legacy browsers)
  • service workers and implication on design and development
  • common front-end challenges and solutions
  • accessibility issues and techniques
  • offline functionality and progressive web apps
  • tooling (performance, frameworks, testing, quality assurance)

The language of the event is English. The event is a non-smoking event.

Doors will open at 08:30 for registration. The workshop will start at 09:00 and finish at 17:30. Lunch and coffee breaks are included in the fee.

Bio

Originally from Minsk in Belarus, Vitaly Friedman studied computer science and mathematics in Germany, where he discovered a passion for typography, writing, and design. After working as a freelance designer and developer for six years, he co-founded Smashing Magazine, a leading online magazine dedicated to design and web development. Vitaly is editor-in-chief of Smashing Magazine, editor of Smashing books, and a frequent speaker and trainer at web design and development conferences around the world. He currently resides in the lovely city of Vilnius, Lithuania.

  • Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

    Attendees must be at least 18 years of age. Please bring a Photo-ID with you.

  • What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

    Attendees are encouraged to use public transport to travel to the event. The closest tram stop is Moserhofgasse on tram line 6.

    No parking spaces are available directly at the event. Public Green Zone parking is available in the streets around the venue, at standard parking charge rates.

  • What can I bring into the event?

    Attendees are encouraged to bring their laptops to the event. It is not permitted to make video or audio recordings during the event.

  • What's the refund policy?

    If you wish to cancel your order upto 7 days prior to the event, 50% of the ticket cost will be refunded. After that, no refunds will be issued.

  1. Organiser

    The organiser of this event is the Institute of Interactive Systems and Data Science (ISDS), Graz University of Technology, located in Graz, Austria.

  2. Video Recording and Photographs

    Parts of the event may be recorded on audio and video. Photographs may be taken during the event. These recordings and photographs may be published on the internet or elsewhere. You explicitly agree that you may be filmed and/or photographed, that all rights belong to the organiser, and that any such recordings or photographs may be published.

  3. House Rules

    You agree to abide by the rules of the hosting venue.

  4. Right of Removal

    The organiser reserves the right to remove anyone from the event, without the need to give reasons for such removal.

  5. Liability

    The organiser accepts no liability for accuracy, timeliness, correctness, or completeness in respect to the event, its web site, documentation, or associated correspondance. Futhermore, the organiser assumes no responsibility whatsoever for any damage or injury to persons or property during the event.

  6. Refund Policy

    If you wish to cancel your order upto 7 days prior to the event, 50% of the ticket cost will be refunded. After that, no refunds will be issued.

  7. Cancellation

    Should the event have to be cancelled by the organiser, any fees paid will be refunded. The organiser accepts no liability for any costs or expenses incurred beyond a refund of fees paid.

  8. Severability Clause

    If any provision of these Terms and Conditions is found to be invalid, the invalidity of that provision will not affect the validity of the remaining provisions, which shall remain in full force and effect.

  9. Disputes

    All agreements between the organiser and event participants and all disputes which may arise between the organiser and event participants shall be exclusively subject to Austrian law. The place of jurisdiction shall be Graz, unless otherwise required by Austrian law.
