This exercise involves evaluating PCEE, a web-based tutorial (explorable explainer) about the parallel coordinates information visualisation technique for multidimensional data.
[PCEE is still a work-in-progress, expect there to be some issues here or there.]
This is an individual exercise. Points will be awarded individually, not by group.
[You should work alone. This is not a collaborative exercise.]
The materials for this exercise can be found in the folder
ex1-materials/
When inside the folder, to download each file: Right-click - Save link as
Take a look through the log file template
log.txt
.
Install OBS Studio (obsproject.com
).
Read my Guide to Session Capture and my guide to Guide to Using OBS Studio.
Practice making a screen recording of, say, browsing a news web site, whilst giving a running commentary about what you are doing and seeing (thinking out loud). The resulting video should be at FullHD resolution.
[Increase the font size in your browser before you start (say to 150% or 200%), so that text can be clearly read in your screen recording.]
For this exercise, it is not necessary to record your face with a web cam. Only record the screen and your audio commentary.
Start your screen recording.
FullHD, with larger font size.
Open your web browser and point it to:
https://tugraz-isds.github.io/pcee
Work through the PCEE explorable explainer to learn about the parallel coordinates technique.
Remember to talk out loud as you work, describing what you see, think, and do.
At the end of the tutorial, look through PCEE again, and try to find any bugs or issues.
Still talking out loud.
Stop and save the screen recording and remux it to MP4.
Trim any junk from the start and end of the recording. See my Guide to Video Editing.
The final recording should be no larger than 490 MB. Transcode the video down to a smaller size in bytes, if necessary. See my Guide to Video Transcoding.
Name the recording NN-pcee.mp4
, where NN
is
your (main) surname in lower case. For
example andrews-pcee.mp4
.
Copy the plain text log file template
log.txt
to a new
file called NN-pcee-log.txt
, where NN
is
your (main) surname in lower case. For
example andrews-pcee-log.txt
.
Review your screen recording and fill out the log file, documenting your experience. List 2-3 positives and 5-10 negatives (problems) you found in the tool, as well as any other feedback.
Prepare a hand-in folder called iaweb-ws2025-ex1-NN/
,
where NN
is your (main) surname in lower case. For
example, iaweb-ws2025-ex1-andrews/
.
I ask (but cannot require) that you place your work under a CC
licence. To do so, copy, edit (your real name in place of
<AUTHOR>), and include the
file CC-LICENCE.txt
in your hand-in folder.
If you do not wish to do so, do not include the file.
Your hand-in folder structure should look something like this (obviously with your name not mine):
iaweb-ws2025-ex1-andrews/ CC-LICENCE.txt andrews-pcee-log.txt andrews-pcee.mp4
Zip up the folder, so that you have a zip file called
iaweb-ws2025-ex1-NN.zip
,
where NN
is your (main) surname in lower case. For
example, iaweb-ws2025-ex1-andrews.zip
.
Hand in your zip file on TeachCenter before the deadline.
If you have a good reason for missing the deadline, hand in your zip
file by sending it to me with
bigmail.tugraz.at
(do not set a password).
